MR SWEETY G COLLECTION

The Legacy

The Pioneers Of Hip Hop will tell you that Long before Run DMC, LL Cool J and the emergence of Russell Simmons, there was A Battle Rapper, named Glenn Toby, Known by his stage name of Sweety “G”. He was born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens. He was among the first emcees to gain the respect of the great Rappers and DJ's.
Sweety “G” was winning School yard battles at park jams, this gave validity to the borough of Queens along with the likes of The Disco Twins, DJ Divine of Infinity Machine and DJ Understanding his DJ from Cipher Sounds to name a few. “Sweety G” quickly gained the respect of his peers. His performances and reputation caught the attention of Mike & Dave Productions, who booked him to perform at the biggest and most popular venues in New York City, The Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens such as the world famous Harlem World in Manhattan, Club Fantasia In Queens and countless legendary clubs and dance halls.
With a rapid spitfire flow, “Sweety G” gained his reputation by being an emcee that was impossible to beat in a battle. Coming up battling with and against fellow Queens’s natives they paved an undeniable path for future artists from the area to get on scene. As a Hip-Hop pioneer “Sweety G” and his crew were responsible for creating a style that groups including Stetsasonic and Heavy D and the Boyz would become famous for. Sweety G was performing over R&B and melodic rhythms versus the typical break beats that most rappers delivered rhymes over.
By 1979 he was working with some of hip hop's major recording artists including; Grand Master Flash and The Furious 5, Doug E. Fresh, Biz Markie, The CrashCrew, The Cold Crush 4, Fearless Four, Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Positive K, Kool Moe Dee of Treacherous 3, Kurtis Blow, Spyder D, and Jimmy Spicer (SuperRhymes), Kool Klye The Starchild, as well as up and coming rap groups.
